Furnace Blowing Cold Air
A fan moving cold air through the ducts pulls heat out of the house faster than leaving it alone, so it's worth calling before the place drops much further.
When this becomes an emergency
- Registers are pushing room-temperature air even with the thermostat set high.
- The blower runs on and on while the house keeps losing ground.
- You can hear the ignition sequence try several times and then give up.
- Warm air arrives for a minute or two, then turns cool again.
What a pro does
The fan side is working; the fire side isn't. A tech confirms that by watching a full ignition attempt, checking whether the ignitor glows and the flame actually establishes, then reading whether a flame sensor coated in oxide is telling the board no flame exists and dropping the burner out three seconds after light-off. On propane systems a regulator that has frosted over or a tank drawing down in extreme cold can starve the burner the same way, which is why fuel pressure gets checked before parts get quoted. Long-run lockouts also need clearing properly rather than by pulling the disconnect.
