Thermostat Not Working
A thermostat that has quit can leave a perfectly healthy furnace sitting idle, so a call sorts out which end of the wire actually failed.
When this becomes an emergency
- The screen is dark, or lit but frozen on one reading.
- Turning the setting up produces no click and no response from the equipment.
- The room feels far colder or warmer than the number on the display.
- The unit keeps dropping its schedule or rebooting on its own.
What a pro does
Batteries and wiring account for most of these, and neither one's expensive. A tech checks whether the thermostat has power, then jumpers the heat circuit at the equipment to see if the furnace responds, which settles in a minute whether the fault lives at the wall or in the machine. Low-voltage wire run through an unheated attic or crawlspace decades ago is a common failure point in older houses, since a corroded splice or a staple driven too hard shows up as an intermittent fault that comes and goes with the weather. Placement gets looked at as well, because a thermostat on a cold exterior wall will never read the room honestly.
